The University Singers, on their first ever-trip to the Central American countries of Mexico and Belize, has been captivating audiences with the harmonies for which the group has become known. Performing to capacity audiences in the Mexican cities of Cancun and Chetumal, and one performance thus far in Belize City, Belize, the singers are on their summer 2011 tour, ‘From Mozart to Marley’.
The summer tour to Mexico and Belize was conceptualised by the governor general of Belize, His Excellency Sir Colvile Young, himself a founding member and former director of the University Singers.
Joint concept
The concept was put into action by the University of the West Indies Open Campus, led by its head, Jane Bennett, and included the cooperation of the State Government of Quintanaroo.
On Thursday in Cancun, the performance was held at the Casa de la Cultura and, on Friday, The Singers went to Chetumal where they performed at the Teatro Constituyentes Del’74.
At both locations, the concert was attended by members of the state, including the mayors of both cities.
At the end of the performance in Chetumal, it was announced that the Singers were being invited to return to participate in an International Music Festival to be held across the state of Quintanaroo.
On Saturday, The Singers arrived in Belize and were met by Sir Colville and Her Worship Zenaida Moya, the mayor of Belize City. During a brief ceremony, the mayor presented the Key to Belize City to the choir, expressing the hope that this would not be the last time they visit. The mayor also encouraged more Jamaicans to travel to Belize.
She indicated that she travels to Jamaica frequently and hopes this trip by the University Singers will stimulate more travel between the two countries.
The University Singers’ summer tour runs from July 7-17 and continues with performances in Belmopan and Belize City before moving to Florida, on July 13, where there will be three performances.
